Sister Carmel Souliere passed peacefully on October 6, 2026 at the Holy Cross Health Care Center in Manchester, NH at the age of 96 years. Sister was born on April 2, 1930 in Orleans, VT of her parents, Delphice Souliere of St Valerian, QC and Juliette (Lussier)Souliere of St. Hyacinthe, QC. She made religious profession in the Congregation of the Daughters of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on August 1, 1950 in Sherbrooke, QC and enjoyed 76 years in religious life.
When Sister Carmel was asked what her goal in life was, she recently replied, to reach heaven and to live a life to inspire others towards this same goal. Sister was a witness of caring and love for others especially in the education of students in schools and the formation of young women entering religious life in our Congregation in West Africa. Sister was also very concerned about the poor wherever she served in the world,
Sister Carmel was well educated with a BS in Earth Science as well as many courses in theology and counseling. Sister taught elementary and high school students in Colebrook, NH, Champlain, NY, and at the former Mount Assumption Institute in Plattsburg, NY. She was an administrator at senior housing homes of Catholic Charites of Burlington, VT, at Michaud Memorial Manor of Derby, Vt and Loretto Home in Rutland, VT, and a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Home in Burlington, VT.
Sister’s love for the poor led her to serve in our West African Province for five years in the countries of Benin and Togo. Her mission was in the formation of the young women during their novitiate years. She often went to a nearby UN Refugee Camp to be a presence to the refugees. In time she became instrumental in repatriating refugees coming to the US. Later one young man became a Capuchin Franciscan priest.
Sister also went to Madagascar for a year but because of political upheavals in the country was sent back home by the government.
In her retirement years in Littleton, NH, Sister got involved as an advocate for children in the CASA Program of New Hampshire. She also actively participated in programs at the Littleton Senior Center.
As a service in the Congregation at our Mother House in France, Sister became one of the translators of our official documents from French into English.
Sister Carmel is predeceased along with her parents, by her siblings and their wives: Gerard, Gilberte Sawyer, Joseph, Rachel Fox, Rosaire, Marcella Collette, Theresa Perrault, Aurele, Rene, and Reginald. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.
In her declining years, Sister Carmel became a resident at the Warde Assisted Living Center in Windham, NH and later to Holy Cross Heath Care Center in Manchester, NH. We express our sincere gratitude to the staff of these two Centers for their love and concern given to our Sister.
Sister Carmel you have reached your goal, your eternal heaven. We rejoice with you and ask you to pray for us as we continue our journey for a heavenly reunion.
