Peggy Ann Powers

Peggy Ann Powers July 14, 1952 – October 31, 2026 Peggy Ann Powers (Hummel), was born on July 14, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Joseph and Rosemary (Chester) Hummel. She spent her childhood and teenage years in California, where she was raised and graduated from John H. Francis Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley in June 1969. After graduating high school, Peggy made her way to Vermont, a place she would come to call home for the rest of her life. Peggy was a woman who lived life on her own terms. She was strong, independent, and never one to sugarcoat things. Peggy told it like it was, and you always knew where you stood with her. But beneath that tough exterior was a woman with a deeply caring heart who would do almost anything for the people and causes she loved. Peggy owned and operated the Clyde River Coffee Shop in Island Pond, Vermont, where she perfected her talents as a cook and baker. She became especially well known for her apple pies, which were loved by many and became one of her specialties. Peggy’s love for her community and, especially, its Veterans was a defining part of her life. She was a lifetime member of the Brighton Post American Legion Auxiliary in Island Pond. Over the years, she organized parades, catered countless functions at the Legion, and made sure that Veterans were cared for and remembered. She especially made a point of ensuring that no Veteran was alone during the holidays. Peggy also served for several years as the Bar Manager at the American Legion. It was there that she met James “Jim” Powers. After being together for 12 years, Peggy and Jim were married on August 28, 2010, at their home in Newark, Vermont. They were surrounded by Jim’s daughters and their husbands, grandchildren, siblings, and close family and friends. When Jim became ill, Peggy devoted herself to caring for him. She remained by his side throughout his illness until his passing on July 7, 2013. Peggy retired from the American Legion in 2012 to care for her husband, but she never truly stopped being part of the Legion family. She remained close to the organization and was always willing to help when questions or needs arose. Peggy found joy in the simple things in life. She loved fly fishing, cooking and baking, and crocheting special gifts for her family. Her homemade creations were gifts made with love and treasured by those who received them, especially the crocheted slippers and hats. Her family was always close to her heart. Peggy is survived by her three stepdaughters, Pamela D’Alio and her husband, Michael; Patricia Groat and her husband, Bryson; and Paula Borci. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Courtney Riley, Brian Riley, Michael D’Alio, Brittany D’Alio, Anthony Borci and his fiancee Ciara Machin, Dani Borci, and Brianna Groat; and her great-grandchildren, Charli Riley, Lilliana Riley, Harper Riley, and Mackenzie D’Alio. She is also survived by her sisters Jean and Mary Hummel; sisters-in-law, Deborah Orsi and Rona Powers, along with extended family and many dear friends whose lives she touched throughout the years. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Rosemary Hummel; her beloved husband, James Powers; her brother Joseph, and her cherished dogs, Lady, Starsky, and Hutch. Peggy leaves behind a legacy of strength, loyalty, generosity, and love. She cared deeply for her family, her friends, her community, and the Veterans she worked so hard to support. She may have had a tough exterior and a straightforward way of speaking, but those who truly knew Peggy understood the size of the heart behind it. She will be remembered for her famous apple pies, her willingness to lend a hand, her fierce devotion to those she loved, and the many lives she made a little better simply by being there. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Donations in Peggy’s memory may be made to Veterans Inc., Worcester, Massachusetts, an organization supporting Veterans, a cause that was very close to Peggy’s heart. Burial will be private.
