James L.
Starr
Mar 29, 1953 — Jun 10, 2018
Jimmie "Bones" Starr passed away on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at the UVM Medical Center of pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Newport, VT to Ila and Jack Starr on March 29, 1953. He graduated from North Country High School in 1971 and went on to earn his Bachelor's degree and Master's Degree in Education from Johnson State College.
His interest in government and love of history began when he was just a boy and he became a page for his grandfather George Eddie Starr at the Vermont State House. He served as a North Troy village trustee twice. Once from 1987-1994 and then from 2006-present, when he was also moderator of the village annual meetings. An educator of 42 years, he started his career teaching in Somersworth, New Hampshire. Over the years, he has taught in Richford, was a teaching principal at Lowell Elementary and
was principal of Troy Elementary. For the past 24 years, he has been the Vice Principal at Enosburg Falls High School. He has helped many a young person find the right path to adulthood. He also coached softball, soccer and basketball and refereed soccer and basketball. Jim had a deep love for his family both past and present. He enjoyed the company of older relatives and appreciated their wisdom. He purchased and lived in his grandparent's house. He loved the Starr family holiday celebrations and the parties at the cabin. A day skiing with his children was perfection for him. His favorite title was Grampie Starr. Spending time with Ellery and Ila brought him great joy.
In 2005, he married Jennifer Gaffney on the top of the Stratosphere Hotel in Las Vegas. They packed a lot into life and had many great adventures in their time together. They were co-owners of Four Corners Mini Mart for 12 years. For the past five months, they faced Jim's illness as one. Jim was a happy gardener, expert skier, and "picky" deer hunter. He took great pleasure in riding his Harley around the beautiful Vermont countryside. He and Jen loved Laconia Bike Week. Jim enjoyed 4- wheeling, snowmobiling and snowshoeing on Round Top. He was enthusiastic about watching most
sports, especially baseball and his beloved Red Sox.
In addition to Jen, Jim is survived by his mother, Ila Starr; his children, Anna and Brendan O'Shea, Leah and Mark Finch, Seth Starr; his granddaughters, Ellery and Ila; his siblings, Virgil and Linda, Jack and Dianne, Gary and Pam, Betty Griggs and Tommy Akers, Billy and Penny Flynn; many Starr nieces andnephews; the mother of his children, Nancy McDermott; and his family by marriage.
Jim was predeceased by his father, Jack Starr.
Jen and Jim are deeply grateful for the love and support provided by family and friends over the past five months. Thank you to Principal Erik Remmers, the EFHS community, and to FNESU for their kindness. Jim's treatment at UVM would have been much more difficult without the American Cancer
Society's Hope Lodge. The beautiful facility but, more importantly, the wonderful people helped to ease an extremely difficult situation.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 18, from 5-8 pm at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Rd., Newport, VT.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 19, at 11am at the First Congregational Church, 14 Main St., North Troy, VT.
Interment will follow in the North Troy Village Cemetery.
