Susan Agnes Best

Derby - Susan Agnes Best, 74 years old, a longtime resident of Derby Line VT, passed away unexpectedly in her home on Thursday Feb 20th, 2025. Born on July 22nd, 1950, in St. Albans Bay VT, she was one of five children of Jay Best, SR and Dorothy Duffus Best.

Susan graduated from BFA St. Albans High School in 1968 and UVM College in 1972 with a degree in Political Science. While attending UVM, she was a waitress at Brunelle's restaurant in between semesters.  After graduating from UVM, Susan worked for the U.S. Customs until her medical retirement. During her later years at U.S. Customs, she was a labor union representative. She later worked at the Town of Derby Line as a lister for several years. She served on the Orlex Credit Union Board of Directors for almost 25 years.

Susan never married but filled her life with love, caring for all of her nieces, nephews, friend's children, and eventually great nieces and nephews. They were her pride and joy whom she loved very much. Her more memorable names were "U-U" from her nephew Mark and "Goo Goo" from her great nephews. She loved summer vacations with her nieces and nephews, cooking, baking (especially bread), making donuts, gardening, canning, traveling to Maine, seeing the ocean, going to casinos, crocheting blankets (lots!), sewing, and shopping! Sue grew up on Lake Champlain with her family and loved fishing, boating, softball/baseball as a child, campfires, and hosting dinners/entertaining. She was raised Methodist and was most recently welcomed at the Albany Methodist Church where she participated in Bible Study and cooked for fund-raising events.

Susan's surviving relatives include her siblings: Jay Best JR. and his wife Georgia of New Haven, VT; Nancy Best of Georgia, VT; Christine Best and her partner Ralph Cote of Barre, VT; her nieces and nephews: Heather Best, Hannah Brush, Jessica McDonough, Bryan Ouimette, Jennifer Hoover, Elizabeth Reed, David St. Pierre, and Mark St. Pierre; her great nieces and nephews: Emma Best, Carlisle Brush, Channing Brush, Zahra Ouimette, Asher Reed, Clayton Reed, Oaklen Reed, Rowan St. Pierre, and Jacob St. Pierre. Sue's family friends she held close to her heart included the Batchelder's, Thompson's, and Eurbin's.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her Brother David Best.

Final care was provided by Curtis and Britch funeral home in Newport, VT.

A funeral service will be held in the Spring, on Saturday May 31st, 2025 at 10:00AM at the St Albans Bay United Methodist Church (575 Lake St, St. Albans Bay, VT 05481) followed by interment at the St Albans Bay Cemetery.
