Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, Shirley Ann Stone, age 89, of Glover, Vermont. She passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6th, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on October 19th,1936, in Newport, Vermont, to the late Arthur and Laura (Still) Stone, Shirley lived a life full of love, kindness, and devotion to her family. On December 27th, 1951, she married the love of her life, Arland R. Stone,Sr.; with whom she shared 58 wonderful years.

Shirley cherished her family deeply and leaves behind countless cherished memories. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Arland R. Stone, Sr.; her beloved son, Arland R. Stone, Jr.; and her treasured grandson, Keith R. Stone. Her warmth, generosity, and gentle spirit will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.

She leaves behind her six children, who were the center of her world: her sons Brian Stone and wife Micheline, Bruce Stone, and Terry Stone and former wife Rose Stone, all of Barton; and her daughters Gail Stone and husband Ron Chasse of Colchester, Diane Landry and husband Clement Landry of Orleans, and Candy Bacon and husband Doug Bacon of Barton.

Shirley also leaves behind her sister Beverly Cleveland, sister-in-law Donna Sweeney, many dear neighbors and friends, and a large and loving family of sixteen grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy.

Shirley spent many years working as a lunch cook at Glover Elementary School and North Country Hospital in Newport, where she was known for her kindness and strong work ethic. Family meant everything to her, and she cherished holidays, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and any gathering that brought her loved ones together.

Our mom proudly displayed a license plate that read "Lucky7," a reflection of how proud she was of her seven children. She found happiness in life's simple pleasures—dancing, gardening, reading, and especially vacations to Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Her beautiful geraniums lining the Stone farmhouse porch each summer were a true labor of love and brought smiles to all who passed by as would be a reflection of her kind, sweet personality that everyone who met her adored so dearly.

The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff at The Manor in Morrisville, Vermont. For the past nine years, your compassion, patience, and loving care meant more to us than words can express. You took the time to truly know our mom — her love of playing bingo, her smile that could light up a room, and the gentle spirit that led so many of you to call her an absolute sweetheart. You treated her with dignity and kindness, caring for her not just as a patient, but as family. Knowing she was surrounded by such genuine love and care gave our family great comfort, and we will always be thankful.

A celebration of Shirley's life will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at The Newport Church of the Nazarene, 115 Elm Street, Newport, VT 05855. A light lunch will follow the service.

In the spring, a memorial service will be held at Andersonville Cemetery in Glover, Vermont, with arrangements to be announced at a later date.
