Obituary

Ronald Jerome Scherr July 12, 1937– April 15, 2026 Ronald Jerome Scherr, 88, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026. Ronald was born on July 12, 1937, and attended Union Hill High School, where he enjoyed playing basketball in his youth.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from September 1954 through August 1968, achieving the rank of Builder Petty Officer First Class. He served with the Navy Seabees; USS Ticonderoga. Ronald proudly served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged.

Ronald lived a life marked by adventure and craftsmanship. He served as first mate on a sailing expedition with his close friend, Luke Murtagh. Together, they built their boat by hand and traveled down the East Coast to Bimini. An accomplishment that reflected his skill, determination, and love for the sea.

Ronald had a heart for animals, always taking time to care for and protect both domesticated and wildlife.

Ronald made many meaningful friendships throughout the Newport community and will be remembered for his stories, kindness, and steady presence.

He is survived by his sister, Barbara Helmick and her husband, Lyle Helmick; his son, Jamie Hamblin; and his granddaughter, Bailey Moody, Jamie's daughter, along with her spouse and children. He is also survived by his nieces Debra Fyfe, Janis Fyfe, Susan Armelli, Melissa Parker, Carrie Libbett, and Janel Granata, as well as his nephew Stanley Wyka, and their families. He is further survived by extended family members, including great-nieces and nephews, among whom he shared a particularly close bond with Krystal Koopmann and her daughter, Kaylee Koopmann.

Ronald was predeceased by his parents Martha and John Scherr and his siblings, Carol Fyfe, Martha Scherr, and James Scherr.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his home caretaker Judy, as well as the dedicated medical staff at North Country Hospital for their compassionate care and support.

Ronald will be remembered for his service, his adventurous spirit, his love for animals, and the many lives he touched along the way.

Services will be held on Sunday, April 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Curtis-Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home, 37 Lake Road, Newport, Vermont. A burial service will take place on Monday, June 8, at 1:00 p.m. at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 487 Furnace Road, Randolph Center, VT 05061, where Navy honors will be rendered.
