Obituary

Robert W. Wood, M.D. "Woody" passed away peacefully at home on November 7, 2025, with his wife Cathy and daughter Cynthia by his side. He had been receiving treatment for Acute Myeloid Leukemia, which was no longer effective.

Bob was born on August 11, 1946, at Walter Reed General Hospital to Frederick W. Wood, M.D., and Patricia Wright Wood. He grew up in Binghamton and Vestal, New York, and attended Choate Boarding Prep School in Wallingford, Connecticut. He later studied at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, earning a B.A. in French Literature. After graduation, he worked as a salesman for Sunoco in Pennsylvania before being drafted in 1969. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps Officer Training School, received an honorable discharge, and remained forever proud to be a Marine.

His next chapter began in Boston, where he worked in the emergency room at Massachusetts General Hospital as an admitting assistant while completing pre-med courses at UMASS, Suffolk University, and Harvard. It was there he met Cathy, the evening triage nurse, who would become his partner in life for 54 years. During his time at MGH, he also served as a research technician for three years.

Bob went on to graduate from the University of Massachusetts Medical School with honors in clinical medicine and surgery. He completed a surgical internship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, followed by a residency that included ten months in specialized Surgical ICU and Medical ICU/CCU. In 1983, he began his residency in Anesthesiology, later serving as Chief Resident in Critical Care at UM Medical Center. He became board certified in both Anesthesiology and Critical Care, practicing in Plattsburgh and Saranac Lake, New York, before moving to Newport, Vermont, where he served as the anesthesiologist at North Country Hospital.

Seeking more time with patients and a deeper connection to their medical journeys, Bob pursued four years of Primary Care residency at Baystate Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. Despite the demanding schedule, he often drove north on his days off to be with Cathy and their three children.

Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Bob and Cathy opened a small solo primary care practice in Derby, Vermont, where he served as physician and Cathy as office manager. From 1999 until his retirement in 2017, they built lasting relationships with patients and families. Bob cherished listening to patients' stories, understanding their needs, and sharing in their life journeys.

In his younger years, Bob enjoyed sports including tennis, rugby, lacrosse, hockey, running, and cycling. He was endlessly curious, with a passion for understanding "how things work," whether through reading, research, or exploring topics ranging from medicine to politics.

In their younger years, Bob and Cathy hiked the White Mountains, canoed the Algonquin Lakes in Canada, traveled cross country multiple times starting off in a 2-man tent then a Suburban and finally a 2007 Air Stream.  The last trip was across to Washington State from July into Sept of 2025.  Upon return he found out his treatment was no longer effective and would continue to drive to St. Johnsbury for labs and blood infusions twice a week.

Above all, Bob's greatest joy was his family. He shared 54 years with his beloved wife, Catherine Feher-Wood. Together, they raised three children—Peter (married to Jennifer), Sarah Christianson (married to Keighan), and Cynthia—and delighted in their grandchildren, Woods and Cardon. Their family remains close-knit, deeply supportive, and devoted to one another.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Patricia Wood, and his in-laws, Andrew and Irene Feher. His cremains will be buried at sea from a ship deployed out of Norfolk, Virginia, with full military honors, as befitting his service as a Marine. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no calling hours or memorial service.

To honor Bob's memory, please give by loving and embracing your family and friends, and by reaching out to those who are lonely or in need.
