Obituary

Nancy Anne Poitras passed away on December 24, 2023 at the age of 67 years. A longtime resident of Boxboro, Massachusetts, Nancy moved to Vermont in 2012 to help care for her aging parents. Her final residence was a beautiful cottage on a lake in the woods in Barton where she loved the forest and the solitude of northern Vermont. She died at home surrounded by her lovely furnishings, her artwork and her many projects in varying stages of completion. Nancy lived a peaceful and elegant life of her choosing in the most stylish and perhaps unconventional of ways. Nancy was born in Concord, MA on January 7, 1956, daughter to the late David C. and Theresa M. (Castellano) Poitras. She was raised in Harvard, MA and graduated from The Bromfield School with the Class of 1974. As a child Nancy loved books, reading, walking in the woods and most of all she loved fabric, sewing and creating. Nancy made her own stylish clothing and was meticulously groomed and dressed everyday for school or for play. After high school Nancy had several jobs working with fabric, design and crafts. Nancy lived for many years in Boxboro, MA with her former husband Peter Bowers during which time she took classes in business and worked in the corporate world. She excelled in these jobs, but despite her excellent abilities and successes, this was not the world for Nancy. Nancy's love of art and passion to create lead her on many paths: writing, drawing, painting, furniture restoration, knitting and quilting. Everything she created was beautiful and magical. The finished pieces were lovely, but Nancy's heart and soul was in the process of design and creation. Nancy displayed her quilts and art work in many locations over the years. She also taught sewing, quilting and knitting to individuals and groups. Members of quilting and sewing groups were thrilled to have Nancy participate and bring her extensive knowledge and expertise to share with them. Nancy was kind and generous and graced many of us with gifts of her creations, always willing to share her time and talents with others. Nancy is survived by her brother: James Poitras (Lani Bottis) of Rutland, MA, three sisters: Sandra J. Poitras of Leominster, MA, Suzanne M. Poitras (Gerry Boucher) of Newburyport, MA and Anne M. Poitras of Danville, VT, four nieces/nephews: David West, Christopher West, Maggie Rae Poitras and Matthew Poitras. A service of spiritual remembrance will be celebrated for Nancy at 12 Noon on Monday, January 15, 2024 at the former Harvard Public Library located on the town common at 7 Fairbank Street, Harvard, MA with a private burial at the Bellevue Cemetery where her cremains will be interred with her beloved parents. If attending the service, please bring a small pine bough or evergreen branch from your woods. In lieu of flowers kindly consider a donation in Nancy's memory to: Central Vermont Humane Society, 1589 VT Route 14 South, East Montpelier, VT 05651. Thank you.
