Obituary

Manuel E. "Manny" Chastain, 88, formerly of Newport, Vermont, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026.

Born on January 14, 1938, in Murphy, North Carolina, Manny was the son of the late George Chastain and Maureen Fleming Chastain. On July 19, 1969, he married Adelgunde "Gunde" Chastain, and together they shared many years of love, companionship, and adventure.

Manny proudly served his country in the United States Army for more than 21 years before retiring in 1980. Following his military career, he remained dedicated to serving others through his community involvement. He was a member of the Freemasons from 1974 to 1977 and served as both Past Commander and Service Chaplain of VFW Post #798 in Newport.

Manny and Gunde enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and creating cherished memories together. He found great joy in tending his flower gardens and was known for always being willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbors. His kindness, generosity, and servant's heart left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Manny was predeceased by his beloved wife, Adelgunde "Gunde" Chastain.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews, as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews who will cherish his memory.

A graveside service for Manny and Gunde will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery on July 25 at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather for a luncheon at VFW Post #798.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VFW Post #798 in Manny's memory.

Manny will be remembered for his devotion to his country, his love for his family, his dedication to fellow veterans, and the kindness he showed to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
