Obituary

Luella May Leeper Lasseigne died peacefully in Glover, Vermont, at the age of 98.

She was born on November 11, 1927, in Portland, Oregon, to William and Nellie Leeper, a family descended from Oregon Trail pioneers. She was raised in Walla Walla, Washington, where she attended public schools and later graduated from St. Mary's Nursing School in September 1948. She devoted 50 years of her working life to nursing and had a deep love for reading and for her Catholic faith.

Luella moved to Los Angeles as a young woman where she met Lionel Leighton "Larry" Lasseigne. They married in 1951 and raised their family in Venice Beach. In 1971, they relocated to Vermont after purchasing the old Barton Hotel. After the hotel burned, they settled in Wells River, Vermont, in 1976. Luella and Larry shared 66½ years of marriage until Larry's passing in 2017.

Together, Luella and Larry raised four children: Lawrence Joseph, who preceded her in death; Teresa May Westbrook (Richard) of Brunswick, Georgia; Annette Marie Parenteau (Gerard) of Westmore, Vermont; and Jon Pierre Lasseigne (Lori) of Wheelock, Vermont. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

In her later years, Luella lived at an apartment complex for older adults in Island Pond, Vermont, where she remained until her passing.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday December 27, 2025 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Barton with Rev. Greg Caldwell officiating a Mass of Christian burial. A private burial will take place at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph, Vermont, where she will be laid to rest between her husband and her son, Lawrence. In Lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. Anthony's Foundation, 150 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco, California 94102.
