Louis N.
Carter
Dec 30, 1931 — Apr 29, 2026
Louis N. Carter passed away peacefully, on April 29, 2026 in Newport VT. He was born on December 20, 1931 in the family home on Clyde Street. Louie resided on Clyde Street for most of his life.
One February 9, 1952 he married Lucille Sheltra, who predeceased him on their 67* wedding anniversary.
Louie grew up being a painter but knew that wasn't the career for him. As a young family man, he found the love of carpentry with the help of Andy Joyal. Andy took him under his wing and taught him the ins and outs of the trade. This job took him all over the east coast remodeling Fishman's stores. He spoke fondly of that time, with plenty of laughs. As his boys grew older, he decided to go on his own and formed Louis N. Carter, Builder. Later years he and his sons formed Carter Made Homes. They built beautiful homes and did many remodeling jobs for Jay Peak, North Country Hospital, Newport County Club and many area schools.
Louie dedicated over 55 years to the volunteer Ski Patrol and many of those years were as Patrol Leader. You were sure to find him on the mountain every Saturday and Sunday from the first day of the ski season to the last day in the spring. Louie taught all his children and grandchildren the beauty of skiing; to watch him ski was to watch a feather floating across the snow. Rick, Randy and Jody all spent time with him on Ski Patrol. He was especially proud of having the opportunity to travel with his son Rick to Utah and get to ski and watch Rick race at Park City. As he got on in years, he did less skiing, but he could still be found in the patrol room on the Tram Side of the mountain helping people in need.
His hunting camp he and the family and friends built was a source of pride for Louie. He loved the beauty and quiet of the place. He had many happy memories with Rick & Randy and grandsons Jamie and Zachary and friends sharing his space. It made him happy to see others enjoy the camp as much as he did.
Besides skiing and hunting, he enjoyed golfing with his nephew John Cote. Louie even got to experience the thrill of going to the Masters with his friend Bob Beerworth, courtesy of Jay Peak upon his retirement as Patrol Leader.
He is survived by his children Rick Carter and his wife Lynda, Daughter-in-law Nancy Carter, and daughter Jody Tweed and husband Brian. By his grandchildren Melissa Carter, Chasity Carter, Jamie Carter, Zachary Tweed and Erica Tweed. Great-grandchildren Brooklyn, Clay, Mackenzie, Olivia and Jackson, as well as great-great grandchildren Jude and Jaime-Lynn. He is survived by sisters-in-law Alice Edwards and her husband Olin and Laurette Cote. Also, by his chosen family David Ghelli and his daughter Anna Boulay. And Dean Sweeney and children Tammy Johnson and Tracey Sweeney. And many nieces and nephews.
Louis was predeceased by his wife Lucille and sons Randy and Scott. He was predeceased by his sister Vivian Judd, and brothers Leonard Carter, Victor Carter, Francis Carter, Wayne Carter, Lionard Carter, Robert Carter, and Fred Carter and their spouses. Chosen family Ruth Sweeney and Lori Ghelli.
A graveside service will be held on May 30, 2026 at Pine Grove at 11:00.
