Joan S.
Curtis
Jun 28, 1943 — Mar 23, 2024
Joan S Curtis passed away peacefully in the comfort of her own home on March 23rd after a brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her immediate family and friends.
Joan was born on June 28, 1943 to Richard and Jane Scott in Newport, Vermont. She was the eldest of two children and lived on Bluffside Farm.
She was a part of the last generation of family who owned and operated Bluffside Farm. From a very young age, Joan worked on the farm alongside her father and brother. Joan had so many stories to tell about what the farm used to be and what the Bluff's had truly been like years ago. It was always great to hear about the "old days". Joan was a Vermonter through and through.
After graduating from high school Joan attended the Mary Fletcher School of Nursing in Burlington, VT and became an RN, like many other members of her family. This was one of the proudest accomplishments in her life. Joan spoke very fondly of her years in nursing school, and also of her life-long friend, "Veni" (Arlene Robinson), whom she met while at school. She worked at North Country Hospital for over 30 years. Throughout the last years, she was the lead shift coordinator and "ran the house." Her years working at the hospital were some of her favorite.
In September of 1957, Joan met Paul Curtis at a football game, and the rest was history. They got married on June 7th, 1965 and remained together until Paul passed away in 2013 after a long battle with cancer. Paul was the absolute love of her life, and after his passing, life was never the same.
Joan was the superintendent of Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport, VT. She was very proud of the fact that Pine Grove was one of three privately owned cemeteries and spent many summers caring for the grounds. She always wanted the cemetery to look sharp and was a frequent visitor to "check the cemetery". Her knowledge of the grounds and the people there was extensive and we will never be able to replicate it. Her expertise with all the cemetery business will be missed.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Paul A. Curtis, her mother and father, Jane and Richard Scott, and her son-in-law, Tom Christoni. She is survived by her daughter, Annie Christoni and her partner Jeff Dudley, her son Paul (Pete) Curtis II, her granddaughter Sam Christoni, her brother Dan Scott and his partner Nico Hastings, her nephew Kory Scott and his wife Renee Rivard, her niece Kristy Scott, and many other cousins, nieces, and nephews. There are too many to name! She also leaves her best guy- her cat- Clancy G. Scott Curtis behind. He brought her joy for several years.
Her best friend in the world was Francine Curtis. They shared many great times over the years with the Curtis family and had always been close. If it wasn't for her dear friend, Francine Curtis, it would not have been possible for Joan to remain at home. Francine brought light to us at a dark time and we will never be able to thank her enough for the love she brought to mom.
A gathering will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Northeast Kingdom Learning Services, 55 Seymour Lane, Newport, VT 05855. Joan was a firm believer that all had a right to an accessible education.
