Obituary

Elizabeth Nellie Jacobs née Benjamin

"Mom, Nana, Aunt Betty"

Elizabeth "Betty" Jacobs, 90, of Derby, VT passed away peacefully on March 9, 2025 surrounded by her loving family. Born on January 28, 1935 to Gwendolyn and O'Donald Benjamin, she was the second oldest of four children - Harold, Audrey, and Tony. She was a graduate of Derby Academy in 1951. She joined the US Army in the secretarial pool and served in Germany during the Korean War from 1951-1955. Upon her return, she married James (Jim) Jacobs on November 20, 1956. Together, they had nine children and raised them on their family homestead on the Holland Road in Derby Line.

In the early days, you could find Betty and Jim rocking on their front porch or taking a ride in their beloved Cadillac. If you were to enter the homestead in the evening, you would most likely see Jeopardy! or Wheel of Fortune on the tv in the den with a cozy wood fire burning nearby. Whether you were a fixture in the family, or just passing through, no one left Betty and Jim's house hungry and if you were lucky, it was Betty's famous spaghetti sauce or baked beans on the menu.

Despite Betty devoting most of her life to caring for her children and grandchildren, she had an array of hobbies and interests. She enjoyed spending summers at Seymour Beach in Morgan. She deeply loved her country and proudly flew the American Flag consistently. She took delight her collection of dolls and would dress and display them in a beautiful glass cabinet in her living room. She always wore red lipstick and dressed to the nines in bright colors and beautiful jewelry. In her more recent years, you could find her taking trips to the casino with her daughters or pulling rip tickets with her special friend Lorna at the Tavern on the Hill. Lastly, Betty was a lifelong & loyal Red Sox fan and it is only appropriate that we acknowledge that by leaving this world at 90 years old, she played all nine innings.

She is survived by her children; Debbie Jacobs (Steve), Carrie Jacobs (Joe), Laurie Jacobs (Steve), Jimi Jacobs (Dianne), Libby Jacobs, and Bart Jacobs (Amy), Her grandchildren; Bria Horton, Cole Labrecque, Ryan Jacobs, Lana Labrecque, Haylee Jacobs, Alexandria Devost, Preslee Riendeau, Cade Seguin, Austin Peck, Garrett Jacobs, Kealey Daigle, Braxton Birchard, Sabina Jacobs, George Jacobs, and James Jacobs. Betty also leaves behind 12-plus great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly, bonus grandchildren Nathan, Abby, and Noah, special family friends Lorna Young and Deb Thompson and many nieces, nephews, friends, in-laws, and outlaws. She was predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband Jim, infant daughter Lana Marie, son John, daughter Julie and granddaughter Kyra Jacobs-Birchard.
