Obituary

Avis B. Rogers, 95, of West Charleston, VT, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2025, in Barton, VT.

She was born on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1929, to James and Jessie (Wilson) Spaulding in Morgan, VT

Avis graduated from Derby Academy and worked various jobs including "driving stage" (mail delivery to town), waitressing at area restaurants, Butterfields (Tivoly) and Ames Department store.  She was also a driver for RCT (Rural Community Transportation).

Avis was a past Worthy Matron of the Orleans Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.  She was a longtime member and a deaconess of the Free Will Baptist Church in West Charleston and a member of the Ladies Christian Guild.

She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Davis and husband Rod of Derby, VT, and grandchildren Heather Nyquist of Biddeford, ME, Marissa Blake and husband Tom of Rutland, VT, Corey Davis of Henniker, NH, and Connor Davis of Montpelier, VT, and great-grandson John Blake.  She is also survived by her sister-in-law Bev Spaulding of Island Pond, VT and by nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, James and Jessie Spaulding, siblings Rose Flanders and husband Ted, Alton Spaulding, Milton Spaulding, Elva Blanchard, and Leo Spaulding. Her daughter, Donna Rogers predeceased her, passing away in 2019.

Life, nature, and people were Avis's pastimes and joys.  She was an avid Boston sports fan and enjoyed watching the Red Sox and Celtics on TV.  Carl "Yaz" Yastrzemski and "Big Papi" David Ortiz, were two of her all-time favorite baseball players.  Larry Bird was her Celtics superstar to cheer on.

Vermont was her home, and she felt truly blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the Northeast Kingdom.  Avis loved the landscape and especially the wildlife that would frequent her property.  She would feed the birds, chipmunks, and squirrels while watching deer in the pastures across from her home.

Her father had a "green thumb" for vegetable gardening, whereas Avis did so for flowers. Fragrant lilacs, peonies, and lily-of-the-valley were her favorites.  Many family members have perennials of hers that they can enjoy and watch bloom in memory of her, a reminder of her beauty and sweetness.

Avis was a devoted mother, grandmother, and caregiver.  She was a giver, and person who enjoyed helping others.  One would be hard-pressed to find a sweeter or kinder soul.  She was a woman of indomitable spirit with immense strength and immeasurable love.

Those who knew Avis quickly realized that she had the gift of gab.  She loved to talk with people.  She especially loved to talk about her grandchildren.  They were such a source of pure joy for her, and she would literally beam while speaking of them.  Even after the shadow of dementia darkened her memory of their names, the love always shined through when she saw their faces.  Love was always recognized.

As her health declined, she resided at Newport Health Care in Newport, VT and then at Maple Lane, in Barton, VT where she received loving care of the nurses and staff these last few years until her passing.  Special heartfelt gratitude to Pam Archer, Stacy Emerson, Sarah Soskin, Mark Crankshaw, and Dr. Maria Fatigati for not only the medical care she required, but for the respect, dignity and empathy given to her.  The compassionate support provided to family members of a loved one with dementia and nearing end-of-life care was deeply appreciated.

A graveside service will be held on May 31st, at 11:00 am at the West Village Cemetery in West Charleston, VT with the Rev. Fred Barker officiating.

Should friends desire, contributions in Avis's memory can be made to Orleans-Essex VNA and Hospice, 46 Lakemont Road, Newport, VT or the Pope Memorial Frontier Animal Society, 243 Woods Farm Road, Newport, VT 05855.
