Alfred James
Young
Nov 3, 1939 — Jul 7, 2024
Alfred James Young
11/3/1939 – 7/7/2024
Alfred (Fred) Young, 84, of West Charleston, passed away on July 7, 2024 at Bel Aire Nursing Home surrounded by family. Fred was the second oldest of twelve children born to the late Wilfred Alton Young, Sr. and Eva (St. Pierre) Young of Brownington, VT. After a long fight against Alzheimer's, Fred leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Anna Young (Faust), and children: Gary Young and wife Jennifer of Newport, VT; Eugene (Andy) Young and wife Marion of Madison, AL; Katherine (Kate) Pierce and husband Craig (Chip) of San Diego, CA, and Tracy Gentler and husband Evan of Irasburg, VT. He also leaves behind brothers John, Richard (Rick), Albert (Bug), Robert, and Leon (Beaver), and sisters Marie Viens, Shirley Perry, and Sharon Faust. He is predeceased by brothers Wilfred, Jr. (Wally) and Don (Dino), and sister Dorothy (Dot) Broe. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Danielle Terrenzi, Elizabeth McElhaney, Jessica Hutto, Amber Irvine, Josiah Young, Sean Young, and Amelie Gentler, along with 10 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Fred had a kind and gentle nature and was loved by all who met him. He was always quick to jump in to help anyone in need and strongly believed in hard work and honesty as his guiding principles. Fred grew up on the Young family farm in Brownington and originally had plans to start his own farm, but it was not to be. Fred was an expert woodsman, as well as a skilled welder. He spent most of his working life doing various jobs that allowed him to use his hands, including positions at Butterfields (Tivoly), Indian Head (Columbia Forest Products), Ethan Allen, Westwood Fence, and other independent jobs working in the woods with his brothers. Even in retirement, Fred worked odd jobs that kept him in the woods cutting trees and clearing survey lines, along with keeping up his vegetable garden and feeding his ever-present, large woodpile, which was always neatly stacked (by Anna).
Fred loved nothing more than spending time in the woods enjoying nature or watching the fish jump in Orleans by the river. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and anything that kept him outside. He also loved hanging out playing horseshoes, listening to music, dancing, or sharing life's stories, whether it was with siblings, children, grandchildren, or friends. Many tales came to life sitting around the kitchen table enjoying meals, with Fred always quick to ensure that no one left hungry, telling Anna that they need to "feed the people". One of Fred's favorite activities was listening to his wife, children, and grandchildren sing old country songs and church hymns.
Fred was deeply loved and will be missed by many. Calling hours will be held at the Curtis Britch & Bouffard Funeral Home located at 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport on Thursday, July 11th from 6-8 pm. The funeral will be held on Friday, July 12th at 1:00 PM at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orleans, followed by a brief graveside ceremony at St. Theresa's Catholic Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to attend a meal and share stories of Fred at a location to be announced at the service. Donations in Fred's name can be made to the Living Waters Hospice House COG, PO Box 1104, Newport, VT 05855. Online condolences may be made at curtis-britch.com.
