Obituary

October 9, 1949 – February 10, 2025

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Alexis Jean Balkam Dean, a beloved mother, dedicated children's librarian, and compassionate soul, who departed this world on February 10, 2025, at the age of 75.

Born on October 9, 1949, Alexis's life was a tapestry woven with stories, imagination, and unwavering love. As a children's librarian and storyteller, she ignited the spark of wonder in countless young minds, opening doors to enchanted worlds and timeless tales. Her passion for literature wasn't confined to the walls of the library; for 35 years, she extended her kindness to prison inmates through bibliotherapy, believing deeply in the transformative power of words to heal and inspire change.

A single mother since her son Zack was just four years old, Alexis was the epitome of strength and devotion. She was not just a parent but the biggest fan and steadfast supporter, instilling courage and confidence with every step taken together. Her love was a guiding light—ever constant, ever reassuring.

Alexis's vibrant spirit was reflected in her love for all things purple, a color as rich and warm as her own personality. Owls and fairy tales adorned her world, symbols of wisdom and wonder that mirrored her own qualities. She was a gifted writer of short stories and found joy in painting, her creativity spilling over into everything she touched. Evenings were often spent immersed in the magic of the BBC's "Merlin," where she delighted in stories of heroism and enchantment much like the ones she cherished sharing.

Her generosity knew no bounds when it came to helping her family and those around her. Alexis had a unique ability to make everyone feel valued and heard, offering a listening ear and a comforting presence. Her legacy is one of empathy, resilience, and a zest for life that continues to inspire all who knew her.

Alexis is survived by her loving son, Zack, his wife Brandy, and her cherished grandchildren, Alayna and Wes.

A celebration of her life will take place in the coming spring, as friends and family gather to build a memory and fairy garden in her honor. A northern mountain ash tree will be planted, with her ashes interred in a living urn to become one with the tree. This living memorial will stand as a symbol of her enduring spirit, allowing her love and warmth to continue to grow and flourish in the hearts of all who visit.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to local libraries or literacy programs, echoing her lifelong mission to spread knowledge and hope through reading.
