Obituary

Alena Sadie Malanie Hill Sherlaw, age 101, was born on April 20, 1925, in East Ryegate, Vermont, to Clarence and Eva Morse Hill.

In 1942, Alena married Harry Sherlaw, and together they raised four daughters: Edna, June, Harriet, and Mary.

Alena lived in East Ryegate, Newport, and Newport Center, where she spent 86 years of her life. She worked in manufacturing at Weyerhaeuser in North Troy, Ethan Allen in Orleans, and Indian Head in Newport. Alena also devoted many years to caring for senior citizens in her community. She was a lifelong member of the Forever Young Club.

Alena enjoyed crocheting and was well known for her beautiful crochet doilies. She also loved sewing, playing bingo, doing word search puzzles, and trying her luck with scratch tickets. Alena especially enjoyed giving back to her community by dressing stuffed bears for the RSVP program, with the bears donated to children as Christmas gifts. She also loved listening to old-time country music.

Alena is survived by her three daughters: Edna Baraw of Newport Center, June Sheltra of Newport Center, and Mary (Jeff) Price of Morgan.

She is also survived by her grandchildren: Darlene, Doreen (John) Baraw of Newport; Bradley (Sonia) Baraw of Westfield; Lynne (Doug) Matten of Newport Center; Jason (Kimberly) Prue of Newport Center; Jennifer (Brian) Cook of Newport Center; and Jeremy Prue of Pamplin, Virginia.

She is further survived by her great-grandchildren: Jacquelyn (Dennis Whitter) Prue, Hunter Prue; Addison (Mackenzee) Cook; Katelyn, Zoe, Isabella, Lawson, Easton, and Gianna Prue; Makayla (Christian) Paxman; Hazel and Jacob Baraw; Michelle and Andrew (BrookeLynne) Matten; Lettie (Juan) Hale, Arley Hale; Brandon (Samantha) Baraw and Kristi Baraw. She is also survived by her great-great-grandchildren Isabella, Braylynn, and Walker Baraw.

Alena is also survived by her sister, June Stuart of Graniteville, Vermont; special nephews John Stuart and Edward Hill; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Sherlaw, in 1980; her infant daughter, Harriet May Sherlaw; and son-in-laws Frank Baraw and Everett Sheltra. She was also predeceased by her brothers Clarence, Oliver, and Dean Hill; and her sisters Capitola Hill, Vandetta Collins, Helen Rainey, Dwanetta Bickford, Eva Collins, Theresa Stuart, and infant sisters Joan and Eva.
